Back in December, I was attending the monthly National Association of Women Business Owners networking breakfast along with friend and client, Julie Baeder (who I had the opportunity to photograph when she was named as one of the 100 of Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business; go Julie!) Julie immediately brought me over to meet her fabulous pilates instructor friend, Nicole Martin. It turns out that Nicole is the owner of Ritual Pilates in Oakland. Nicole and I clicked right away and started working together shortly after. I’ve been wanting to try pilates for a while. She is an amazing instructor and our weekly sessions are often the highlight of my week’s exercise routine. I’m getting taller!!
Shortly after Nicole became my pilates instructor, she asked me to capture her maternity photos as she was expecting her first baby in April! Of course I agreed. We met for the session in her charming home in Montclair. Nicole’s adorable kitty cat, Rose, joined us for a few photos as well. At the end of the session, we agreed that when baby Fiona arrived we would get together again and photograph the little baby girl.
The second session took place when little Fiona turned 3 months. When I arrived at Nicole’s, we looked for a beautiful place to do the photos. The wonderful mid-century modern chair caught my eye as we looked around the living room. We both agreed that it’s clean wood lines and white leather upholstery would be perfect for the shoot and comfortable for baby Fiona. Don’t you agree?
For many portrait photographers like myself, family photography is a truly a pleasure. I love the opportunity to document the unique character of each child and to capture the family relationship…..immense love! First I consult my clients to develop family photography ideas that resonate with their personal style. Then we have a fun family photo shoot that allows them to express their personalities perfectly.
For this session the white seamless studio look was a perfect foil for the bold graphic red, white, and black theme they chose for their wardrobe. Want to learn more about choosing colors for your outfits? Check out this in-depth introduction to the Color Wheel. If that one is too involved, here’s a basic Guide to Matching Colors. Outfits for family photography should reflect your family’s authentic style, so there is no right answer about what to wear. Elegant neutrals; bold primary colors; eclectic mixed patterns? Anything goes, as long as it’s thoughtfully selected (that doesn’t mean it has to be match-y) and reflects your style.
By using negative space in the composition and not over-posing the family, I created a dynamic collection of images that feel modern and crisp as well as relaxed and playful. Family photography in the studio doesn’t have to look traditional or conservative! Give me a call and we’ll come up with some fun family portrait ideas that work for your family photography. Every family is different; we’ll find the style that works for you. Portrait photographers should use their skills to represent who you are, not impose their style on you.
By the way, check out the eyelashes on this little one in the first image; I think they’re some of the longest I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been doing family photography for years! Wow! Thank you to this wonderful family for choosing me as your family photographer!
I’ve had a wonderful fall; lots of outdoor family portrait sessions with clients who I have the pleasure of seeing every year. It’s a real honor and a treat(!) for me to see the kids growing up, and to be able to document these years as they fly by. This charming girl has been in front of my camera since she was a baby, and it is truly amazing to see her engaging with the world as a little person! More to come, but here’s a favorite for now. Childlike wonder? Check.
I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this little one twice now, as part of her First Year portrait package. She is adorable and obviously had a great time with her basket of fruits. Imagine if we could all still get that excited about the simplest thing…a stuffed orange…oh my! Well, that might be a stretch for us “adults” but let’s try to find our childlike wonder whenever we can; I know we’ve still got it!
Let’s celebrate! Nancy Rothstein Photography was voted Best Family Photographer 2013 for Alameda County by Parents’ Press readers. What an honor!
I love photographing families around the Bay Area, and with the kids out of school and the good weather (fingers crossed), it’s the perfect time to schedule a portrait session. Thank you to my wonderful clients for your support!
Sunday, May 12th is Mother’s Day….the official one. To me everyday is Mother’s Day. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t feel grateful for my Mom and revel in her fabulousness. (That’s not a real word, I know, and since my Mom is an English teacher that’s what we call ironic.)
This month we will celebrate Motherhood with a chance to do two things all Moms love to do: document their children and save money. You can’t argue with that, so don’t even try!

Family Portrait Sessions in May
My favorite thing about photographing kids is getting in touch with that state of childlike wonder that we so often forget. Imagine if we looked up at every airplane in awe, or found every little pond perfectly entertaining. These two brothers are a charming pair, and I’ve had the privilege of documenting their growth. This last session was an amazing milestone, as they are both on the move and really able to engage with their environment. For the photographer, that means a lot of running around, and I’m happy to do it.

What a cutie!! I got a serious workout during this portrait session at my favorite outdoor photography playground, Mills College. This charming girl explored everything at a very fast pace. I chased her all over the grounds…up and down the lawn, through the bushes, and around the buildings. Of course, I’m used to this, but her Mother was starting to feel like we couldn’t possibly be getting any good images. I reassured her that this is totally normal. We all know you can’t tell a three year old to sit still!
To me photographing children means catching real moments as they play, expressing their natural sense of wonder and adventure. It’s not about forcing them to sit still and say “cheese.” It’s so much fun to watch parents react with surprise when they see the beautiful images that celebrate their child’s authentic personality.
