Oakland Family Portraits

Noemi-2014-0008RT

Meet Noemi. I have the great pleasure of photographing her every year. I always look forward to seeing the whole family and getting a glimpse into the current state of mind of this charming and quickly growing child. She’s been a real joy to work with and seeing her personality develop has been so much fun; I especially love this phase, when finding a stick is like finding a magic wand. Noemi-2014-0003-0005

I had to dig around in my inbox to figure out when I first photographed her. Think it might be time for one of those brain training programs! Turns out it was November of 2012; she was around 6 months old. Her parents opted for a three session family portrait package to capture her at 6 months, close to a year, and again at a year and a half. I remember my favorite image from our last session, and ended up sharing it on the blog as well. Our latest images capture a strong-willed two and a half year old who now insists on dressing herself and has learned the word “No!” So, you get it, she’s on her way to running the show completely (if she isn’t already.)

Noemi-2014-0011-0012
We did our session at Mills College, which is one of my favorite locations…and my alma mater. Seriously, this place is the gift that keeps on giving, as I never run out of backgrounds to use here. Kids love to run around and explore, finding plenty of fascinating treasures. Watching Noemi interact with this landscape helps me reconnect with that sense of wonder we sometimes lose sight of. Always remember, leaves and sticks are amazing, people!!!

Noemi-2014-0013-0023

Besides the fact that she is adorable and generally a hoot to photograph, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the behind the scenes actors who help make our sessions such a great success. David and Joyce, the wonderful people who brought us Noemi, are AWESOME. I wish I could film some of the scenes that occur on our shoots and share them with you, but alas, that just wouldn’t be right. These two know how to get their kid to laugh, and believe me, they deserve a medal for the funny dances and general hilarity they produce. Move over Zumba, this could be the latest workout craze…they are definitely burning some serious calories. I am generally focused on getting the shot, which is a shame, because I miss actually seeing most of it. But I can hear their antics and see Noemi’s response; laughter that makes my face hurt from smiling so much.

Howtobeselfemployed.com Interview!

I recently photographed the first QB Self-Employed Community Meetup at Impact Hub Oakland. I’m excited and honored that the folks at the QB Self-Employed community decided to include an interview with me on their site as a resource for other businesses. It’s amazing to me to be able to offer a perspective on social media, since it was something I struggled with as a business owner when I was starting out. Figuring out where and how to engage, how to manage the time online, and finding the value in social media platforms were all questions I had to answer for myself. Our interview about my approach to social media is featured in the “Getting Customers” section of the site here; check it out!

interviewBeing a social business in today’s world is more important than ever. There’s no denying that we’re connected to our devices 24/7, whether we’re at work or at play. Even though ways of connecting with each other have changed throughout the years with technology, our need stay in touch remains the same. My clients are authors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders who have very active social profiles. Staying in touch with them and remaining active online is paramount to my business and personal success.

Part of being a photographer is sharing your point of view with the world. I am lucky because I get to connect with people and businesses in person every day. Continuing to cultivate those relationships on social media is a great way to stay connected, share our adventures, and celebrate each other’s successes. What do you do in your business that allows you to remain social? I would love to hear from you!

Professional Portraits with Juliana Park, Author of The Abundance Loop, and Founder of Conscious Wealth

Juliana_Park-0037RT

“Discovering your true self, how much you have and how much you are, will empower you to effectively grow your personal and financial wealth. By carefully going through this process, you will experience abundance, peace, and freedom.” – Juliana Park

Juliana_Park-0050RT

Juliana Park found me through a mutual friend I met while studying yoga and meditation at Yoga Mandala (now Yoga Tree) in Berkeley, and I’m so glad she did. Talk about a breath of fresh air! Juliana’s presence truly lights up the room, and her positivity is inspiring. I was excited to hear that she wanted me to create the images for her new book, The Abundance Loop, and her website, www.julianapark.com.  We had a fantastic photo shoot in May, with styling by the amazingly talented Michelle Moquin, my go to wardrobe stylist, and hair & makeup by Elena Malevanay of Wowpretty, who works her magic with a smile.

Juliana’s story seems like one best heard over a bottomless cup of tea at a sunny kitchen table. Here’s a snippet in her own words: “In 2010, I struggled through a divorce and realized there was more to life than living up to others’ expectations of me. Fear of not being enough entrapped me and I desperately sought the freedom to live an authentic life. I wanted to be…ME. But who was I? What did I really want?

Accumulating material wealth, success, titles, and stuff wasn’t cutting it. But neither was denying all that. With support from friends, teachers, healers, and loads of self-help books, I finally found the key to unlock my own prison. I learned to balance my inner wealth with my outer wealth. I learned to be present while progressing towards my goal. I learned to let go of my fear-based ego and embody my divine self.

My awakening experience gave me a fresh perspective on how to live abundantly and transformed all my relationships –to money, to myself, to others, and to the world.”

Juliana has synthesized her life lessons in her book, The Abundance Loop, which can be pre-ordered now and is due to be released in May of 2015.  She is the founder of Conscious Wealth, which “…brings together different voices on the topic of building wealth and abundance.”  A certified financial planner and Assistant Vice President at a major investment firm, Juliana is uniquely qualified to offer her insights.

If you are as captivated and motivated by Juliana’s story as I am, take the chance to meet her and hear more! She will be at Abundance Oakland! on July 31st, 2014.

In additional to meeting Juliana, Abundance Oakland! is also an opportunity to hear from Editor and Chief of Wear Your Voice, Ravneet Vohra. She and Juliana will share “a powerful message on how to break free from the scarcity mindset and create abundance in your life.” The event will be held at Urban Stitch in Oakland, a fashion boutique (featuring a collection of contemporary designers, specialty lifestyle brands and home accessories.) Come mix and mingle with local fashionistas and listen to these powerful women; hope to see you there!

Family Photography: San Francisco Bay Area

For many portrait photographers like myself, family photography is a truly a pleasure.  I love the opportunity to document the unique character of each child and to capture the family relationship…..immense love!  First I consult my clients to develop family photography ideas that resonate with their personal style.  Then we have a fun family photo shoot that allows them to express their personalities perfectly.

For this session the white seamless studio look was a perfect foil for the bold graphic red, white, and black theme they chose for their wardrobe.  Want to learn more about choosing colors for your outfits?  Check out this in-depth introduction to the Color Wheel.  If that one is too involved, here’s a basic Guide to Matching Colors.  Outfits for family photography should reflect your family’s authentic style, so there is no right answer about what to wear. Elegant neutrals; bold primary colors; eclectic mixed patterns?  Anything goes, as long as it’s thoughtfully selected (that doesn’t mean it has to be match-y) and reflects your style.

By using negative space in the composition and not over-posing the family, I created a dynamic collection of images that feel modern and crisp as well as relaxed and playful. Family photography in the studio doesn’t have to look traditional or conservative! Give me a call and we’ll come up with some fun family portrait ideas that work for your family photography.  Every family is different; we’ll find the style that works for you.  Portrait photographers should use their skills to represent who you are, not impose their style on you.

By the way, check out the eyelashes on this little one in the first image; I think they’re some of the longest I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been doing family photography for years!  Wow!  Thank you to this wonderful family for choosing me as your family photographer!

Happy Father’s Day! Bay Area Family Portraits

Father’s Day is here; a chance to celebrate our Dad’s amazing contribution to our lives.  Was it invented by the folks at Hallmark to sell more cards?  Maybe. Do we care?  Of course not!  We welcome any chance to throw Dad a big party….or just make him pancakes.

Everybody gets different stuff from their Dad….could be a ride in the Radio Flyer, could be a deep philosophical conversation (thanks Dad!)  Whether he’s a biological dad or a fantastic father-figure, we appreciate our Dad’s in all their uniqueness!

Celebrate this Father’s Day with a family portrait, along with a special gift especially for Dad.  It’s the perfect way to remind Dad how much he is loved….every time he sees those smiling faces!

San Francisco Bay Area Studio Family Portraits

I love the way these images capture the authentic personalities of this charming family.  We had a great time during our studio portrait session, which actually seemed more like a play date.  It’s important to me that your kids are truly having fun at their session, because when that happens, smiling for the camera is a natural occurrence, not a forced torture!  No saying “cheese” in my studio!

Bay Area Family Portraits: Mother’s Day Sale!

Sunday, May 13th is Mother’s Day….the official one.  To me everyday is Mother’s Day.  There is not a day that goes by that I don’t feel grateful for my Mom and revel in her fabulousness.  (That’s not a real word, I know, and since my Mom is an English teacher that’s what we call ironic.)

But shouldn’t we pick a day to give special thanks for Motherhood, even though we love our Moms 365?  Of course!  (I’d vote for celebrating quarterly, but we’ll take what we can get in the federal calendar…there’s a lot to fit in.)

So, get to the punch line already, right?!?  Well, this month we will celebrate Motherhood with a chance to do two things all Moms love to do: document their children and save money.  You can’t argue with that, so don’t even try.

Here’s the deal:  $100 Off Family Portrait Sessions in May*

*Fine print: Mom should be in some of the images.

Reserve your session today!

Cute in Pink: Studio Portrait Session

I confess…. I never had an outfit like this as a child.  I lived on a farm and played with sheep when I was this age.  But these two rocked the pink ruffles like no one else could.  All I wanna know is, where do you get an outfit like that?
